WASHDYKE FORM

PHYLLIS GOLD’S FINE PERFORMANCE Phyllis Gold confirmed the good impression formed of her when she won the Lauriston Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on May 7 by a decisive win after giving away starts of up to 48 yards in the Opihi Trot Handicap at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Washdyke on Saturday. Debonair, Empire Lady, Nankin, Patrician, Authority, Loriot, Queen of Scots, Paul Defiant, Van Dieman, Banquet Hall, Wee Clare, Farlena, and Major Gaillard all lost ground in the early stages, and they were hopelessly placed at the end of the first four furlongs. • When the field settled down Highland Prince and Sergeant Major were leading from Blue Signal, Union Jack, Gallant Day, Mischievous, Clean Sweep, Artless, Willow Hall, Swithindale,. and Final Return. . . Mischievous, which started quickly from the 24 yards mark, took the lead in the back straight, but she was soon passed by Phyllis Gold, which led into the straight from Mischievous, Clean Sweep, Artless, Highland Prince, and Blue Signal. I. Smillie set out after Phyllis Gold with Blue Signal, but Phyllis Gold finished gamely to wdn by half a head. Mischievous finished two lengths behind Blue Signal, and then came Banquet Hall, Clean Sweep, Our Flicka, Sergeant Major, Bedelia, and Queen of Scots. An aged mare, Phyllis Gold, which was driven by her owner, R. A. Bebbington. who trains her at Lauriston, is by Lucky Jack from Elvo, a good performer for Bebbington. By Oinako from the Galindo mare, Elveno, Elvo is the dam of winners in Elvo’s Pride and Moongold. On Saturday’s display Phyllis Gold should eventually graduate to good company. Blue Signal’s second was full of merit. He should gain his first win for L. G. Smillie, who trains him on the Washdyke course, on the second day of the meeting this week. A five-year-old Sandydale gelding. Blue Signal is out of Little Claire, which left a winner in Expensive to the same sire. A winner herself with a record of 3min 27 4-ssec, Little Claire is by Guy Parrish or Matchlight from Muricata, by Mauritius from Ocean Wave, by Rothschild from Ripple, by Fleur de Lys. Mischievous, a recent addition to H. 1 Herbert’s team at Waimate, gained her second placing in her last three races when she finished third. A five-year-olc mare. Mischievous, which races in the interests of Mr C. Smaill, who bred her at Heriot, is by Dillon Hall from Monaive, which left a winner in Monaco to Rey d' Oro. By Logan Pointer, Monaive is out of Galindo Lou, by Galindo from Reta Bellman from a Berlin mare. A likely improver. Mischievous should add to her record on the second day of the meeting this week. Wrackdale’s Solid Display Confidently driven by T. Thompson, who trains him at Riccarton for Mr F. Pankhurst, Wrackdale won the Beaconsfield Trot Handicap at Washdyke by e length from Pretty Dillon. Piccolo, Sir Leonard, Lochinvar, a” Metropolis all lost ground at the start, Pretty Dillon being the first to show out from Joygiver, Special Match, Technicolour. Clever Jack, Fulgent, Double Scotch, Tradition, and Wrackdale. Tradition raced up to take the lead approaching the entrance to the back straight, butl she soon surrendered her position to Joygiver. With half a mile to go these two were followed by Wrackdale, Joygiver, Pretty Dillon, Special Match, lona Hall, and Fanciful. Wrackdale was first into the straight for the sprint home, and he hung on to win from Pretty Dillon, Special Match. Sir Leonard, Fanciful, Joygiver, lona Hall, Nature Girl, and Final Return. A five-year-old gelding. Wrackdale, which has raced consistently for two wins and nine minor placings in his 2< starts this season, is by Josedale Dictator from Colleen de Oro, by Rey de Oro from Colleen Wrack (the dam of Ben Adam), by Wrack from Erin’s Isle, by Lord Chancellor from a Prince Imperial mare. Pretty Dillon, a place-getter in two races recently for W. A. Thomas, who trains her at Washdyke, pleased by her effort to finish second. Owned by Mr J. Hamilton, who bred her at Lauder, .Pretty Dillon is by Dillon Hall from Pretty Pointer, the dam of winners in Star Performer and Redcliffe Direct. / Logan Pointer mare. Pretty Pointer is out of Scenery, by Belle Vue from a Wildwood mare. Pretty Dillon appears to be improving with racing. She may win the Winchester Trot Handicap on the second day of the meeting. Jottings I. H. Herbert’s team at Waimate includes a likely young trotter by Quite Sure from Dorothy Dell, which left a winner at the trotting gait in Sure Lady to the same sire. The consistent Casameter should race well in the Addington Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting this week. Golden Shadow, a winner when trained at Cust by O. Nicholas earlier in the season, is now in J. Purdon's team at Addington. A Red Shadow horse, Golden Shadow may add to his record if the track is heavy for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting this week. At Orari Mr R. H. Bates recently transferred Milford Lad from L. F. Berkett’s team at Templeton to G. R. Bates’s team at Orari. By Grattan Loyal, Milford Lad is out of the Guy Parrish mare Selene, which left other winners in Watcher to the same sire, and Lisette to Travis Axworthy. Broke Badly Sent out favourite for the Members’ Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, Single Task began smoothly, but she lost her balance before two furlongs had been covered, and her driver, R. Young, had to pull her up before she would strike her gait. Once she settled down to trot, Single Task showed a lot of speed to finish third to Morning Wings and Super Lady.
