OFFICIAL CREST FOR KAIKOURA

COUNCIL OFFERS PRIZE FOR DESIGN LETTER FROM SHIP’S OFFICER As a result of a letter received from the second officer (Mr G. M. Leggate) of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor vessel, Kaikoura, which is considering the adoption of a crest, the Kaikoura County Council has decided to offer a prize for the best design submitted as an official crest for the County of Kaikdhra, This will be incorporated in the ship’s badge. In his reply to a letter forwarded to the ship by the Kaikoura Cq,pntv Council, Mr Leggate said that the information he had was that Kaikoura was so named by the celebrated Tamatea Pokai-Whenua (1350 A.D.I who, when in search of his three-wives who had deserted him. rested at Kaikoura and roasted a cray-fish. “I had in mind,” stated Mr Leggate, “an escutcheon bearing a cray-fish,’ a Maori canoe, and possibly the famous Kaikoura ranges.” Since it was expected that the Kaikoura would dock in Auckland early in June, Mr Leggate said that he would be pleased to receive a facsimile of the official crest decided upon by the council, which could be superimposed on the ship’s badge. It was decided by the council to compile all relevant historical and geographical data concerning the county and that a prize be offered for the best design for a crest.
