REPORTED ACTIVITY IN FUKIEN

Recent arrivals in Hong Kong from Amoy said to-day that American arms, believed to have been smuggled from Manila, were reaching both the Chinese Communists and the Nationalists in the mountain-locked South China province of Fukien, where there were important connexions with Chinese in practically every country of South-east Asia. It was generally believed in Amoy that the port was being used by the Communists as a clearing house for the infiltration of all South-east Asian countries. The arrivals said that a perimeter extending 80 miles west of Amoy was

, being defended by some of Marshal Chiang Kai-shek’s crack troops. The fall of the port, which is 500 miles south of the Nationalists’ Tsientang river line, would have a special significance in South-east Asia. Trade in Amoy is reported to be dead, except for smuggling and the arranging of migration to South-east Asian countries, usually through Siam. The British authorities in Malaya and the Dutch in Indonesia are said to be making the position difficult for Coipmunist infiltration. One of the strongest Communist links in Fukien is said to be with the Hukbalahaps in the Philippines.
