U.S. OCCUPATION OF GERMANY
“ANOTHER FIVE TO 20 YEARS” GENERAL CLAY’S VIEW (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) BERLIN, May 5. The United States would have to continue occupying Germany for another five to 20 years, said General Lucius Clay, the United States Military Governor in Germany. “I believe that after the establishment of. a government * the control exercised by the occupation authorities
should be tailed off fairly rapidly until there remains but one essential control to ensure that the Germans live up to their own Constitution,” he said. The democratisation programme, he added, had succeeded because all that had been done had come in some way from the Germans themselves. It would be hard for counter-elements to take away leadership from the men who had gained it in this period.
