U.N. DELEGATES APPLAUD LOUDLY

Delegates to the United Nations re- 1 ceived ,the news of the East-West agreement with keen satisfaction. The news arrived when most of the delegates were attending committee meetings of the General Assembly. • General Carlos Romulo (Philippines), chairman of the Second Political Committee, interrupted a debate on Israeli membership of the United Nations to read the announcement to the delegates. They greeted it with loud applause. Dr. Vladimir Houdek (Czechoslovakia) told reporters: “It can lead to a settlement of the German problem and then to the broader agreement for which we all hope.” Mr Hans Engen (Norway) said that the news would bring rejoicing in all

Scandinavia, and would show that the Big Powers had settled a major dif- • ference. Mr Trygve Lie. Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that he was especially happy that the agree- • ment had been reached through the - agency of United Nations delegates. : The agreement opened a way for new [ efforts to settle the German problem—- > one of the main causes of Great i Powers’ differences which had hampered the work of the United Nations. In Washington, Dr. H.. V. *Evatt, i President of the United Nations Geni eral Assembly, said that the announce- • ment was a definite step towards the goal at which the United Nations had : been aiming. He added, however, I that a great deal remained to be done.
