BAKERS AND PASTRYCOOKS’ AWARD
According to an amendment to the New Zealand Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ and their Labourers’ Award, made recently by the Court of Arbitration, the minimum weekly rates of wages, from June 1, 1949, will be as follows:—foreman baker or pastrycook, £8 Ils lOd; journeyman baker and pastrycook, £8 Is 4d; baker’s labourer, £6 18s 8d; packer, £6 18s Bd. The wage for a journeyman jobber will be not less than £1 13s a day and for a labourer jobber £1 8s 4d for an eighthour day. He will be paid not less than five hours’ wages h\ any event. If a journeyman jobber is employed for less than eight hours he will be paid not less than 4s IJd an hour, and a labourer jobber not less than 3s 6|d an hour.
Junior labourers starting at under 19 years of age begin at £3 Is a week, rising to £4 16s 6d after the fifth sixmonthly period. Those junior labourers starting between the ages of 19 and 20 will be paid £3 13s 6d for the first six months and £4 16s 6d after the third six-monthly period. The wage for a junior labourer starting at the age of 20 will be £4 15s 6d for the first six months and thereafter £5 2s until he is 21.
Females wijl start on a weekly wage of £1 16s for. the first six months, and after the fourth six-monthly period will receive £3 12s. When they reach the age of 21 they will be paid £4 10s.
