CURRENT NOTES

Mrs H. S. Williams and Miss Elizabeth Williams (Clyde road) will leave Christchurch next month to spend a few months in Australia.

Mrs H. Wales (centre commandant) and Miss M. Bain (commandant, cooking detachment) have returned from Wellington after attending a meeting of the V.A.D. council.

Mrs E. J. McEachen, a well-known member of musical circles in Christchurch, will leave in the middle of June to spend a holiday in Sydney and Melbourne. Mr E. J. Bell (librarian of the Christchurch Public Library) and Mrs Bell will leave on Monday for Dunedin where Mr Bell will attend a library conference. Mrs L. W. McCaskill (Fendalton) will leave New Zealand by the Wapganella soon to join the Ormonde in Sydney about May 31 for a visit to England. While in London, Mrs McCaskill will stay for a time with Mrs Angus Harrop.

Mr and Mrs Clifford Collins will leave Christchurch to-morrow for Dunedin where Mr Collins will attend a library conference next week. Miss Judith Westoh (Park terrace) who recently gained her diploma of fine arts and was capped yesterday, will leave Christchurch early next month by air for Sydney where she will join the Orion for England. Miss Beatrice Hamilton, of the staff of the Christchurch Public Library, will attend a library conference to be held in Dunedin next week.

Miss Alfreda M. Fisher (honorary secretary to the British Association for the Hard of Hearing), who has been spending a few months in New Zealand, will leave Auckland to-mor-row on her return journey to England. A presentation of a handbag was made at the a Fendalton School yesterday morning to Miss I. Lyttle, who is retiring from the teaching staff. Miss Lyttle, who has been the senior mistress of the school for eight years and a half, will relinquish her post when the school breaks up to-day. Mr A. R. Blank (headmaster of the school) made the presentation on behalf of the teaching staff, and Portia Booth, a pupil of Miss Lyttle in standard six, also presented her with a gift from the school committee, parents, and pupils of the Fendalton School. Mr Blank, Mr N. Bowman (chairman of the school committee), and Mr J. Bowden, a former teacher at the school, spoke in appreciation of Miss Lyttle’s work.

Mrs Alfred Bunz arranged an enjoyable programme, which was presented at an informal musical party held at the Canterbury Women’s Club yesterday afternoon. Songs were sung by Miss Tui Uru, Miss Jean Trail, and Mr Robert Taylor, and niano solos played by Mr Eric Cornwall. The accompanists were Mrs E. J. McEachen and Mrs A. W. Scott. The president of the club (Mrs G. H. Watts), who presided, thanked Mrs Bunz and the artists.

The first May meeting of the Catholic Women’s League at “Maryknoll” was a celebration of “Mary’s Day.” A programme, religious in character, entitled “Our Lady and the Poets,” was arranged by the Marion Group, Miss A. Eady being the convener. Those contributing were: Mrs 'J. A. Cullan, Mrs W. F. Brown, Misses M. Wall, Gill, Fitzgerald, O’Brien. Conway. Jackson, and Lucy and Ida Archer. Suitable hymns, interspersed by recitations and readings, were sung by the choir of St. Mary’s Girls’ College. The Rev. Father E. Joyce gave an address, and Miss L. Donohue thanked the Marion Group.

Advice was given to 10 Karitane nurses, who have completed their training, by Dr. J. F. Landreth and Dr. Eleanor Mears, at a gathering of parents and friends at Karitane Hospital this week. The nurses, Misses J. Grigg. M. Doyle, H. Howes, M. Stevens, V. Clayton, E. Ferrier, B. Williams, L. Black, H. Cooper, and M. Richardson, were each presented with flowers and a booklet on the origin and history of . the society by Dr. Mears. Mrs H. R. Smith, a foundation member of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society, who was at the gathering, was presented with a gift of flowers on the occasion of her eighty-third birthday. Visitors were later shown over the hospital.

Reverend Mother Kennedy and Mother Mackie, of the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Remuera. will visit Christchurch to attend a meeting of the alumnae of convents of their Order, which will be held at the week-end.

The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges gifts of books from Mrs E. ’J. Price, parcels of magazines from Toe H women’s section and anonymous friends, and Mrs Homersham and Miss Tipping for patients in the Cashmere Sanatorium.
