CITIZENS ASKED TO ASSIST. It is not always realised that the Municipal Electricity Department is dependent upon the public for information regarding defective street lights. Letters are not infrequently received, complaining that the writer has waited, for a considerable time in the hope that a lamp would be attended to, whereas, had it been reported on the first day it was noticed to be out, it would have been immediately replaced, and both the Department and the publie bettea served. Some people feel, and the feeling la doubtless prompted by consideration for the Department, that in reporting a street lamp out they ,are making a complaint. This is quite a wrong Impression. The lamps have a limited life. There are now approximately 6132 erected in different parts of the city, and a certain number continually require, replacing. It is a regular part of the maintenance work of the Department, and any information regarding defective street lamps is welcomed as valuable co-operation on the part of the person reporting it. The helpfulness of any information is dependent upon the accuracy with which the exact location of the lamp is described. A ’phone message, or. preferably, a postcard, will always receive immediate attention. Lamps can normally be replaced only on working days, and in order that this may be done on the day the report is received, the information should reach the Department not later than 12 noon. It will be welcomed at any time, but advice early in the day ensures prompt attention. Everyone who reports promptly a defective street lamp will be rendering a service to the community, and the public is hereby invited to give such assistance whenever possible.
