PUNISHMENT OF A CHILD
Sir. —For sheer, unadulterated drivel, the effusions of John Burbridge and “Human and Humane” take the palm. The present era of lawlessness in New Zealand is the outcome of this mushy idea that no child must be checked. None will deny parents’ duty to their children —a most solemn duty to love, understand, train, and where necessary discipline them. Daily I bless my departed parents for my “Victorian” upbringing—despised of our present-day intelligentsia. To train their children in the principles of true citizenship is also the sacred duty of parents. If parents speak firmly and exact obedience td reasonable behests, dorporal punishment is rarely necessary. The idea once obtained that children should respect their parents. No child could be expected to respect some of to-day’s parents: but until such respect and obedience from child to parents are merited and re-establish-ed our present deplorable orgy of crime will continue.—Yours, etc., . R.R.M. May 4, 1949.
