THE GENERAL ELECTION
CANDIDATES FOR OAMARU SEAT MR V. W. WILSON WITHDRAWS From Our Own Reporter OAMARU, May 5. Mr V. W. Wilson, of Taiko, South Canterbury, to-day withdrew his nomination for selection as National Party candidate to contest the Oamaru seat at the coming General Election, because of what is described as a “conflict of mutual interests” between Mr Wilson and Mr T. L. Hayman, of Willowbridge. Six nominees are left in the field. It is understood, however, that Mr Wilson’s services may be available to the National Party in another electorate, possibly Timarii. A statement was made to “The Press” by Messrs C. V. DagliSh and W. Malcolm, on behalf of the group which nominated Mr Wilson. The statement said: “As it is obvious that there would be a conflict of mutual interests between Messrs Wilson and Hayman, who are both admirably suited lo represent the National Party in the Oamaru electorate, the two prospective candidates and their respective nominators have held a meeting, and after a frank discussion, Mr Wilson has very generously offered to withdraw his nomination in order that Mr Hayman may have the fullest support possible.” The statement also said that Mr Wilson’s action would be appreciated all the more, when it was remembered that at the .last General Election he was chosen from seven nominees to represent the National Party in the fight for tjie Riccarton seat. “I wish to thank Mr Wilson for his generous action in witheirawing nis nomination,” said Mr Hayman, when asked if he had any statement to make. “I would like to assure Mr Wilson’s supporters, in town and country, of my best endeavours to merit the confidence Mr Wilson has shown in me by his action.”
Mr Hayman is at present chairman of the Waimate Electorate Committee of the National Party, and Mr Wilson is chairman of the Levels branch of the National Party in the Waimate electorate.
