REMAND ON MURDER CHARGE
ACCUSED HANDCUFFED TO CONSTABLE
(New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND. April 20. Charged with the murder of Govind Ranchhod, an Indian hawker, aged 58, at a house in Nelson street, yesterday, William Rilha Matthews, a labourer, aged 28. appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Matthews was handcuffed to a constable. Senior-Detective Fell said that the case would take some time to prepare. He asked for a remand until May 5, subject to the accused’s consent. Matthews, who was not represented by counsel, was asked by Mr F. McCarthy. S.M.. if he consented to the remand, Matthews, in a low voice, agreed, and was remanded accordingly. An inquest into the death of Ranchhod was opened .by the Coroner (Mr A. Addison) to-day. Evidence of identification was given by Jivpnji Narani. who said he was a nephew of the dead man. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
