ATHLETIC RECORDS BROKEN CANTERBURY LEADS AT END OF FIRST DAY (New Zealand Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 17. Excellent progress was made on the first day of the New Zealand University Easter tournament on Saturday. Preliminary events in the athletics, tennis, cricket, and basketball sections were held, and the boxing, shooting, and rowing were completed. The swimming will begin on Monday. At. the end of the day Canterbury was in the lead with 124 points, the other scores being Otago 111, Auckland 10J. and Victoria 10J. ATHLETICS Records were broken in almost every event in the athletics championships at the Basin Reserve. The weather and the track lent themselves tb good performances. and in two cases records will not be recognised. J. M. Holland, the Olympic representative. competing for Auckland University College in a heat of the 120 yards hurdles, lowered his own record, and in the second heat F. W. Duckworth’s time was also below the previous best. The Otago University* miler, J. D. Sinclair, retained his championship and clipped more than two seconds from the record in a race in which he had no serious competition. Recqpds were also broken by D. R. Batten (Canterbury) in heats of the 220 yards and 440 yards; J. G. S. Myles (Auckland) in a heat of the 440 yards, although his time was not as good as that of Batten; G. C. H. Gilmour (Auckland) in the discus throw; J. Shackleton (Otago) in a heat of the women’s 80 metres hurdles: F. Spencer (Auckland) In the women’s javelin throw A dip in the ground in the run up ruled out as a record the broad jump by C. M. Kay (Auckland), and because of a following wind a new time by B. Hill in the women’s 75 yards flat will not be recognised as a record. With six of the 20 chamoionships completed, points for the men’s athletic shield are: Auckland 8, Otago 4, Victoria 2, Canterbury 1. BOXING The boxing shield was won by Otago, whose representatives won thr?e of the seven weights. Results were:— Bantam-weight.—E. Gardner (C.), Bst 41b, knocked out B. Brown (O.). Bst 61b, C. Wong (V.). Bst 31b. heat C. Meader (A.) on points. Final: Gardner beat Wong on a technical knock-out. Gardner won primarily through the power of his bodypunching, a well-directed solar plexus punch virtually finishing the bout. Feather-weight.—A. Young (V.), Bst 121 b, beat J. E. Cowell (C.). Bst 91b, on points. Final: S. Davis (A.) beat Young on points. This was a closely contested bout, with little between the boxers. Light-weight.—M. Callahan (O.), 9st 71b, beat L. A. Pearce (C.), 9st lib, on a technical knock-out; C. W. Orr (A.). 9st 61b, beat J. Fairey (V.). 9st 91b, on points Final; Callahan beat Orr on points. A solid straight left, which he kept continuously in Orr's face, won the bout for Callahan. Welter-weight.—J. Goldfinch (V.). lOst 51b, beat B. Glengarry (A.), lOst 21b, on points; H. B. Gibson (O.) knocked out R. J. Neilson (C.), 9st 91b. Final: Goldfinch beat Gibson on points This was the best bout of the evening. By his tenacity and harder punching. Goldfinch gradually wore his opponent down, gaining a well-deserved decision. Middle-weight.—W. Boyd (O.) beat J. K. McKenzie (C.) on points; K. Richardson (A.) beat J. Donald (V.) on points. Final: Boyd beat Richardson on points. A heavy puncher. Boyd had Richardson down for a count of seven in the second round. Boyd was the aggressor throughout. Light-heavy-weight. —D. McClymont (O.). 12st 21b, beat G. White (A.)‘, 12st. on points. Final: McClymont beat G. Hutchinson (C.) by a technical knock-out. McClymont opened a heavy attack in the second round, and had Hutchinson at his mercy when the bout was stopped. * Heavy-weight.—J. Ingram (C.). 13st 31b. knocked out R. Wall (A ): J. the heavier and had more power In his punches. BASKETBALL Otago won both their games in the basketball, and their match with Canterbury on Monday should provide very attractive fare. Canterbury is a formidable combination, as it showed by its win over Victoria. Otago’s wins were over Auckland and Victoria. The standard of play was generally high. Scores were: Otago 19, Auckland 11; Otago 16, Victoria 5; Canterbury 20, Victoria 7. SHOOTING The shooting at Trentham was won by Victoria, with 710 points. Canterbury, 703 points, was second, and Otago. 685 points, third. Auckland scored 670 points. A record performance was put up by A. M. Cookson (O.), with an individual score of 142. Individual practices were won by Victoria (300 yards, application), 138; Victoria (300 yards, snap), 210; Otago (300 yards, rapid). 229; Canterbury (600 yards application), 165. High scoring was the'ord&r of the day , U ? e Auckland-Otago cricket match. Auckland declared its first inn-ings closed with etght wickets for 404. T. U. Wells scored a brilliant 198, including 28 fours and three sixes. J. Hollywood scored a fast 70. The most successful bowler was I. Cameron (three lor 113). At stumps, Otago had lost two wickets for 179. Victoria v. Canterbury ~ victorfe lead Canterbury by 101 runs on the first innings. Canterbury collapsed uaaly and coul d muster only 101 runs. The best bowler was Murray, who took five for 29. In the second innings, Canterbury lost two wickets for 22 runs. Victoria scored 202, mainly the result of a fine innings by R. O'Connor. ROWING Canterbury retained the fours title and Aucktend the eights title, and with it the Hebberley Shield in the rowing tournament held on the Korokoro course. Canterbury also won the double sculls event. The races were rowed in almost perfect conditions. In the fours, of one mile, all four crews got away well, but Otago retired almost immediately with a broken swivel. Canterbury drew slowly ahead, with Victoria close behind and Auckland gradually dropping back. Victoria made a big effort towards the end of the mile, but Canterbury won going away by a length. Auckland was four lengths back in third place. Auckland got a lead of about a quarter of a length in the eights, over two miles, the other three crews going away almost together. Auckland led all the way, quickly fighting off Canterbury’s challenge at the mile, and won by two lengths and Vic toria was five lengths away third, although a strong Otago challenge almost caught them on the finishing line. Canterbury and Victoria were the only starters in the double sculls. Canterbury established a slight lead at the start and went on to win by three lengths. The winning crews were:—fours: P. J.
