OTAGO CANTERBURY SURF COMPETITIONS EVENTS HELD AT NEW BRIGHTON The inter-district canoe., and ski competitions between the Otago and Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Associations were held at New Brighton during the weekend. A strong easterly wind and slight and misty rain on Saturday made it necessary to postpone some of the events. Yesterday the weather conditions were ideal for the competition, and there was a large attendance of visitors. This was the best carnival this year, said Mr A. T. F. Stokes (president of the Canterbury Association), welcoming the visiting teams. The surf club teams and members had accomplished a great work in keeping the beaches safe for bathers, and as a result of this there was not one fatality in Canterbury this year, said Mr Stokes.
“When I saw 22 teams from all parts of New Zealand on the beach I realised the wonderful work the surf clubs are doing.” said Mr Norman Ingram (New Zealand Surf Association), referring to his visit to the recent competitions in the North Island. “These clubs are making the beaches safe. Drowning cases in the Dominion are far too high, and I appeal to bathers to keep within the safety zones. We wish to educate the children to keep within safety areas and thus reduce the number of deaths by drowning.” The Scottish Society’s pipe band led the teams in the march past and played selections during the afternoon.
