TRIP TN MONOWAI WITHOUT BERTH

BUSINESSMAN “STOWS AWAY” IN LOUNGE SYDNEY, March 1. Mr R. E. Mcßae, managing director of an Auckland bus company, stowed away in the Monowai so as to reach Sydney to complete a £50,000 business deal. When the ship arrived at Sydney to-day Mr Mcßae said: “I had to come to Sydney and the shipping- company told me I could get a berth if there was a cancellation, but I heard nothing from them. On Friday I boarded the Monowai and when the visitors went ashore I stayed aboard. That evening I slept in the lounge. Lots of people

slept on the deck the first night, and I was not noticed. “The next day I gave myself up. The officers asked me if I was a stowaway, and I told them they could call me what they liked.” Mr Mcßae said he then paid his passage. Immigration officers allowed him to land.
