THEFTS AT HINDS AND ASHBURTON

MONEY TAKEN FROM PREMISES

When the offices of the Ashburton Gas. Coal, and Coke Company, Tancred street, Ashburton, were broken into during the week-end, 12 or 13 shillings belonging to the firm and between £3 and £4 belonging to the company's secretary (Mr H. N. Lewis) were stolen. An attempt to open the safe was made, but the lock jammed. The contents of filing cabinets and deed boxes, which were forced open, were strewn about the floor. Between £2O and £3O was taken by intruders who entered a grocery store owned by M. S. J. Gilligan at Hinds during the week-end. The thieves got in through a window at the side of the store. The police are investigating both thefts.
