MANUFACTURING IN AUSTRALIA
“UNHEALTHY RISE IN COSTS”
WARNING BY MR CHIFLEf (Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 28. The Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) warned to-day that competitive bidding for labour and scarce materials had caused an unhealthy rise in costs in some Australian industries. He said that in some quarters there were signs that industrial expansion was being pushed too far and too fast.
Two strong forces dominated the present trends: (1) the high tay-el of ex-' port incomes because'of good seasons and high export prices, and (2) the continued vigorous expansion of manufacturing industry. There were possibilities of sound achievement, and also some serious dangers. The chance given to primary industries to consolidate their position against adversities would be wasted if the present high returns were unwisely spent or if production costs and land values were allowed to rise excessively.
