RUSH TO PAY RATES
YESTERDAY LAST DAY BEFORE PENALTY The sum of £28,737 in rates due to the Christchurch City Council, Tramway Board, Drainage Board, Fire Board, North Canterbury Hdspital Board, and North Canterbury Catchment Board by the ratepayers of Christchurch was reported as unpaid last evening. Payments of rates in the mail which will be opened this morning will reduce the amount on which the 10 per cent, penalty will be paid. The last-minute rush of rates payments was probably the heaviest on record, the sum of £97,972 being handled yesterday against £54,723 on the final day last year. Long queues towards the counters of the two cashiers were formed during the day. Even the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) was approached in his office by ratepayers who asked him to accept their amounts and to arrange for the forwarding of receipts so that they could avoid waiting. The total amount of rates received by last evening was £686,093.
