MONDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M) BOOKMAKER FINED £2OO Robert Henry Odell, aged 45, a salesman (Mr C. V. Lester), pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on February 26. Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty said that, when detectives called at premises at 73 Bordesley street at 12.10 p.m. on Saturday, they found Odell accepting bets over the telephone. He had already taken £39 10s in bets and, while the detectives were on the premises, £3B 10s was taken m bets. He had four previous convictions for offences under the Gaming Act, and it appeared that he had been defying the law. , . The Magistrate said that Odell had not been before the Court for nearly four years," but the fines imposed for previous offences had not deterred him. Odell was convicted and fined £2OO. THEFT OF WATCH Hector James’ Francis Whall, aged 48, a core maker (Mr R. A. Young), was convicted and fined £lO on a charge of stealing a wristlet watch, valued at £lO, the property of Joan Teresa Kotlowski. He was also fined £2 on a charge of making a false statement to the police. INTOXICATED MOTORISTS Raymond Maurice Ivory, aged 20, a butcher, who pleaded guilty to a charge of being found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car in Colombo street on February 27, was fined £lO. His driver’s licence was cancelled and he ' was prohibited from obtaining another for 12 months. Cyril Edwin Bennett, aged 26, a truck driver (Mr R. A. Young), pleaded guilty to a charge of being found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car in Buckley’s road on February 26. He was fined £lO, his driver’s licence was cancelled, and he was prohibited from obtaining another for 12 months. REMANDED Henry Charles Barnett, aged 32, a labourer (Mr J. K. Moloney), was remanded to March 7 on a charge of breaking and entering the premises of Collins Quick Lunch Parlours, Ltd., at 370 Moorhouse avenue, on February 26, and committing theft. , . ~ . Sub-Inspector G. H. L. Holt, asking for the remand, said that the accused was in hospital, suffering from a bad cut on the arm. , , Raymond Standish Fiela, aged 28, a woodturner (Mr J. K. Moloney), was further remanded to March 7 on a charge of obscene exposure. He was allowed bail in his own recognisance of £lOO and one surety of £lOO, and ordered to report daily to the police.
