PICKLED PELTS

SALE AT WELLINGTON Offerings were 132 lots, comprising 21.492 dozen sheep and 183,299 dozen lamb pelts at the second sale of the season of pickled sheep and lamb pelts. A full bench of buyers was present. The prices for lamb pelts showed a slight easing tendency, but the demand for sheep pelts was keen with prices rising from 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, on those of the last sale. The full range of prices was as follows : Auckland District.—Sheep, 93s to 102 s 6d a dozen; lambs, 42s 6d to 53s a dozen. Hawke’s Bay-East Coast.—Sheep, 88s 6d to 106 s a dozen; lambs, 36s to 44s 6d a dozen. Wellington-West Coast.—Sheep, 82s to 107 s a dozen; lambs, 43s to 54s a dozen. P;cton-Nelson.—Sheep. 60s 6d a dozen; lambs. 33s to 37s a dozen. Canterbury-Otago.—Sheep, 60s to 72s a dozen; lambs, 39s'to 45s 6d a dozen. Southland.—Lambs, 42s to 52s 8d a dozen. United States’ Gold Pile.—The United States gold stock totals 24.230,000.000 dollars. During the last year the stock increased by 1,507,000.000 dollars, and financial authorities expect that the gold supply will increase in 1949, though probably at a slower rate than last year. The United States is committed to buying all gold offered to it at 35 dollars an ounce.
