DR. EVATT AND PANDIT NEHRU

COMMENT ON WHITE AUSTRALIA REPORTED INDIAN ATTITUDE i(Rec. 8 p.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 27. The Minister of External Affairs (Dr. H. V. Evatt) left Australia for London three days ahead of schedule to call on Pandit Nehru, in New Delhi, with a personal explanation. It is learned authoritatively that he has already apologised to Pandit Nehru for his statement in the House of Representatives on February 9 that Pandit Nehru supported a white Australia policy.

Correspondents say that a diplomatic incident between India and Australia was averted only by the promptness of Dr. Evatt’s apology. pit is understood that Pandit Nehru’s view is that a white Australia policy is justifiable only if its aim is economic rather than racial.
