61 SCHOOLS WITHOUT MILK
NO SUPPLIES DELIVERED THIS YEAR (P.A.) DANNEVIRKE. Feb. 23. Sixty-one schools in an area stretching from Hawke’s Bay to Wairarapa have not received a delivery of milk for children since the new school year began four weeks ago. The area includes the main centre. Waipawa, Waipukurau. Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua, Masterton, and Carterton. which are usually supplied from Dannevirke. The matter has been referred to the health and education authorities, the member for Parliament (Mr K. J. Holyoake) has appealed direct to the Minister of Health (Miss M. B. Howard) urging immediate restoration of the service. The contracting company filed an application for an increased transport rate more than a year ago, but no finality has been reached. Throughout 1948 the company operated at a loss and when the new school year commenced it refused to continue deliveries, said an official of the company.
