CANTERBURY TITLES OPENING EVENTS HELD -J«L first - evel ? ts - the three miles walk and the six miles race, of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Association’s championsnip meeting were decided at Lancaster Park last evening. Results:— B Three Miles Walk.—R. C. Brown 1, C. J. Baxter 2. Time, 22min 33.45ec. Six Clarke 1, F. Mair 2, A. Ca ndy 3. Time, 32min 36.55ec. Other events to be decided this morning will ion lude J he ha , m mer throw, heats in the 120 yards and 220 yards hurdles, pole vault, javelin, and mile. # ♦u Th c afternoon’s programme will include the finals in the sprints and hurdles, the 880 yards, and the three miles. The lastnamed event will be contested by a T l V? l ng field> which, will include W. R. Wilkinson, J C. Daly, L. E. Fox, and M. - ’ Craighead. The recond for the race is held oy C. H. Matthews, who in 1938 ran the distance in 14min 19.6 sec. The present champion is Daly, 15min 30.4 sec, and is expected to improve on this time in to-day’s race. In fte sprint events, D. R. Batten and E .- Ayson, who will race against the visiting Australians next week, will add interest to the meeting. D. Dephoff, the present holder of the broad jump championship record of 22ft 82in, may improve upon this record. The relay race, always a popular feature of athletic meetings, will be contested by tetams from Old Boys, University. Canterbury. Technical, ‘ Wigram and Presbyterian Clubs.
