CONSTABLE ASSAULTED
SEAMAN SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT
George Thomas McNamara, aged 25. a seaman (Mr D. W. Russell), who had pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Frank Skipton Thompson, a police constable, at Lyttelton, on February 7, so as to cause him actual bodilv harm, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour when he appeared before Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court yesterday. His Honour said that McNamara had behaved in a most abominable manner. He had come into the country unlawfully and appeared to be a social nuisance. He had indulged in what, on some occasions, appeared to be a favourite sailor-like sport, assaulting and obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty.
