BOOK AND COIN PARTY
At the invitation of Mrs T. F. Gibson, a large gathering of members of the Christchurch ladies’ guild of the British Sailors’ Society and their friends met at her home. Ashbrook. Fendalton, yesterday, and enjoyed a.party in pleasant surroundings. Mrs G. W. Q. Smithson (president of the guild) briefly described the work undertaken by members, and said that branches of the society were to be found throughout the Empire, with the
King as president of the parent body. She appealed for more members, and thanked Mrs Gibson for her continued hospitality to the guild. A musical programme, arranged by Mrs Alfred Bunz. was presented by Mrs E. B. Boyd-Wilson and Mr Claude O'Hagan, with Miss Blanche Atkinson and Mrs E. T. McEachen as accompanists. Miss B. Sanders, on behalf of the guild and the board of directors of the institute in Lyttelion. thanked Mrs Gibson and all who had contributed to the success of the party. As the result of a request that 6ach guest should contribute “books or coins.” about 200 books, some playing cards, a pile of magazines, and donations amounting to about £25 were received. The reading matter will be nlaced aboard shins or at the Seamen’s Institute in Lyttelton, and the monev will be used to further the guild’s many activities for the benefit of seamen.
