STATEMENT BY MR THOREZ
ASSEMBLY TO CALL FOR EXPLANATION
RED ARMY AND FRENCH WORKERS • (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, February 24. The Paris correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says: “The French Communist leader (Mr Maurice Thorez) will be called on in the French Assembly to-day to explain the declaration he made on Tuesday to the central committee of the French Communist Party that if the Red Army occupied French soil it would receive the same welcome from French workers as it was accorded in Poland, Rumania, and Jugoslavia. “This follows the adoption last night by the Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee of a motion by a Popular Republican Party deputy, asking the Government to make clear its attitude to Mr Thorez’s statement. The motion was carried by 21 votes to 13, the dissenting deputies being all Communists. “Great prominence was given m the French press to Mr Thorez’s declaration, but with the notable exception of the Communist newspaper, THumanite,’ the general attitude was severely critical.”
