TEMPERANCE UNION URGES STRICTER CONTROL

Stricter police supervision of drinking at dances was advocated by the Dominion convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, which has concluded at Timaru. The following resolution was adopted: “This convention considers that police supervision is not vigilant enough and many of the offenders are insolent and defiant. It therefore urges stricter police supervision with prosecutions after each raid.” Other resolutions adopted were: “Because of the ignorance of the real nature and effects of alcoholic beverages on the human Jsody and on the race, it be urged that in all schools and church organisations an address or lesson on scientific temperance be given at least once a year by a medical man. or other competent person.” “That full inquiries be made by unions into regulations concerning consumption of alcoholic liquors by pilot officers.” “That this convention urges the Minister to inquire what drinks will be provided for servicemen and women in camp during the Christmas and Nevy Year activities, and requests that he give the necessary authority for aerated drinks, soft cordials and pure fruit drink's to be provided on these oceassi'ons for those who would prefer them to alcholic drinks, and the latter be provided only for those who request them.”

“That the Rugby Union and similar bodies be approached concerning the playing of games on Sundays. This convention urges that such games should be played on days other than Sundays, since disregard of the sacredness of that day is detrimental to the character of young people.”
