KAIKOURA CLUB

TROTTING

TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS P. G. O’Reiily’s bracket. Aqua Lady and Black Diamond, .and L. O. Thomas’s bracket, Waroonga and Tekau, will probably dispute favouritism in the Kaikoura Handicap, the main event at the Kaikoura ; Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora tomorrow. A four-year-old daughter of Water Ranger and Maureen Derby, Aqua Lady has raced consistently this season for a win and eight minor placings in 13 starts. Aqua Lady showed that she was in good order by finishing second to Pierre in 3min 17 4-ssec, after seven horses in front of her with' two furlongs to go in the Trial Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Black Diamond lost his chance in the Trial Handicap at New Brighton Iwhen he began slowly. After racing at the rear of the field for more than a mile, he showed a lot of speed over the last two furlongs to finish seventh. Like Aqua Lady, Black Diamond, which won the Seiwyn Handicap at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on January 29, stays well. Waroonga and Tekau both have some useful performances to their credit and they should earn some of the money in the Kaikoura Handicap. Of the others, Ben’s Son and Mobile Globe (which are both trained at Tinwald by C. M. Laing), Uranium, Grand Fleet, Great Wonder, and Fabric Silk appear to have the best prospects. A son of a winner in Ben Adam, Ben’s Son started the season with two wins, and in his five starts since then he has added two minor placings to his record. Mobile Globe's list of placings this season include a win in 3min 12 2-ssec from a 3min 31sec mark in the McLean Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day. A repetition of that form would find Mobile Globe hard to beat to-morrow.

Uranium, a winner earlier in the season, raced well at her last start to finish second to Zulu in a fast-run race in the Strowan Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington- on February 12. Together with Fabric Silk, which has two wins, four seconds, and a fourth to his credit this season, Uranium should be in the picture with Black Diamond. Aqua Lady, Waroonga, and Tekau at the finish of the Kaikoura Handicap. The president of the Kaikoura FTrotting Club, Mr H. J. Hewson, said during the week that he is hopeful that future meetings of the club will be held on its own course at Kaikoura, where a five and a half furlongs clay track has been put down. Mr Hewson said that the track, which is 58 feet wide at the narrowest part, should provide fast going. The Rangiora track is reported to be in good order. Good fields of maiden and improving horses are carded, and patrons should enjoy an interesting day's sport. Horses in form irfblude:— 11.30 a.m.—First Hapuku Handicap: Our Flicka, King Pepper, Jackie Pointer.

12.15 p.m.—Second Hakupu Handicap: Lady Goodwood, Glamis Castle, Key Spring.

1 p.m.—Stewards’ Handicap: Captain Hardy, Concord, Pat Review. 1.45 p.m.—Kaikoura Handicap: Black Diamond-Aqua Lady bracket, Tekau-Wa-roonga bracket, Uranium.

2.30 p.m.—KekerangU Handicap: Fanciful, Woolaway, Ipso Facto. 3.15 p.m.—Keenan Handicap: Concord, Captain Hardy, Encircle. 4 p.m.—Peninsula Handicap: Technicolour, Almeta, -Gloxania.

4.45 p.m.—President’s Handicap: Grand Fleet, Uranium, Regency.

Showed Some Speed Jackie Pointer, which is engaged in the First Hapuku Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora tomorrow, showed some speed after breaking in the early stages to finish third to Clever Jack and Gold Gift in the first division of the Oamaru Trot Handicap at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting ,on January 3. »

A five-year-old gelding, Jackie Pointer is by Jewel Pointer from Moranne, the dam of winners in Frances Easton, Colin Waters, Mac's Ace, and Agate. Brackets at Epsom The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Epsom to-morrow: Logan Handicap: Field Marshal and Fontaine. Manurewa Handicap: Gay Indiana and Reclamation. Great Northern Trotting Stakes: Gallant Bronze and Our Smith; Jersey Joe and Mundanity. Richmond Handicap: Bexdale and Sir Vivian; Jackie Boy and Paper Man; Pony Express, Sandiways. Noble de Oro and Whanako; St. Andrew’s Handicap: King Arthur and Mine Host; Gay Indiana and Reclamation. Henderson Handicap: Dyrham Lea and Ann Scott; Doctor Ted and Double Peter. Unfortunate End One of a consignment recently sent to the Melbourne zoo, the death of the imported Real Guy can therefore reasonably be presumed, this being rather an inglorious ending for a horse of his breeding, says the “Australian Trotting Record.’’ Foaled in America during 1922, Real Guy was by Guy Axworthy (2min Bjsec) from Gay Todd, a good brood mare by Todd from The Gaiety Girl, second dam of Lee Axworthy (Imin 584 sec). Real Guy was imported to Nev/ Zealand where he sired several winners. He was eventually secured by the late John Munro , for his stud in the Yeoval district of New South Wales, and later came into the possession of Mr R. C. Simpson, who was keen to breed f-om Such a well-bred stallion. In due course. Mr Simpson disposed of the stallion and for a time he was owned by the late Mr P. Maclean. The latter sold him to go to Victoria as a very old horse, and the last of his progeny is a goodlooking filly from Lady Angelus. From a Good Family Key Spring, a place-getter in two of this last three races, will make his next appearance in the Second Hapuku Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora to-morrow. On breeding Key Spring attracts attention as he is by Springfield Globe from a winner in Kilrea, by Jack Potts from Colene Pointer, the dam of other winners including Kingcraft. Colene Parrish, Village Guy, Ping, and Poker Face. A Good Performance Tutta Bella was responsible for an exceptionally good performance to account for a strong field in the Riversdale Trot Handicap at Gore on Saturday. She lost 48 yards at the start and then figured in a mishap at the end of half a mile which cost her further ground. It was not until the six furlongs post was reached that she appeared to be balanced again, and she ran a phenomenal last half mile on the outer at the home turn, to get up and win going away. * Tutta Bella is a full-sister to useful pacers in Lou Hall and Esto Fidelis, and she looks like being the best winner left by Lou Thorpe. Fastest Son of Volomite One of the greatest trotting stars of all times. Victory Song, which took a record of Imin 59)sec as a three-year-old, and of Imin 57 3-ssec as a four-year-old, has been retired, and he will head the list of stallions a\*ailable at the (Sastleton Farm Stud in America in the coming season. The fastest son of Volomite, the sire of 18 in the two-minute list, and Evensong, the dam of five in the two-minute list, it is easy to forecast a stud career for Victory Song in keeping with his performances on the race track. Timaru Trotting Club Nominations for the autumn meeting of the Timaru Trotting Club close on Monday next, the 28th inst., at 5 p.m.; also final forfeit, 14th Timaru Nursery Stakes. Advt. CONTROL OF TROTTING Sir, —“The Same To You” accuses me of making wild statements because I offered to bet two correspondents £5 th: t they could not name five “non-triers” at New Brighton. He claims to be a former owner, and offers to give me a lecture about crooked practices. I claim that trotting to-day is quite a clean sport. He claims that as a former owner he can prove his statements; but I claim that myself, my many horsemen friends, and the dozen horses in the backyard can prove something, too. I did not accuse the general public of being all the foolish names that he invented: I wrote of “a cowardly element sometimes heard at the races . . . , \and if “The Same To You” denies the existence of such an element, he must be deaf.—Yours, etc.. S. G. FITCHETT. February 14 1949. [We cannot pursue this correspondence.—Ed.. “The Press.”]
