NEW SESSION’ AT UNIVERSITY
HEAVY ENROLMENTS EXPECTED TOTAL MAY EXCEED 2400 Canterbury University College is expected to have at least as many students as last year when the new session opens on Monday. New enrolments are expected to number about 650 from post-primary schools, 100 by transfer from other colleges, and 50 returned services’ personnel on rehabilitation bursaries. About the same number entered last year. With the |julk of last year’s students completing courses, the total roll may exceed 2400. There has been no material improvemeat in the accommodation at the college and classes are likely to be crowded again this year. In many departments, rooms and corridors have had to be subdivided into cubicles. Since the beginning of last year considerable new staff has been recruited. One of the college authorities said this would mean “not that the position is so much easier, but that it is not as bad as it was.” Among those affected by rearrangements to afford more accommodation is the rector (Dr. H. R. Hulme). He will vacate the traditional office under the clock tower and move into the professorial board room above. The Students’ Association . has placed executive members in some of the main thoroughfares of the college to direct new students. A handbook is being issued with directories to all departments, information about student activities, and college customs. The Students’ Christian Movement is conducting the book exchange. The opening of the college year will probably be marked by the usual welcome to “freshers” bv the rector, an address on how to study by one of the professors, and one on the use of the library. The annual “freshers’ ball” will be held next Friday. The vaYious hostels will probably conduct their initiation ceremonies for new inmates in the following week.
