SPREYDON BAPTIST CHURCH

CENTRALISATION ON NEW SITE As part of a plan to centralise the Baptist Church branches in Spreydon, the Lyttelton Street Baptist Church was yesterday removed to a new site at 244 Lyttelton street. The Sunday School in the West Spreydon School and the youth hall opposite the school have also been moved to this site. A Baptist Church in the Spreydon district was first formed in 1866 and services were held in a sod hut until the first church was opened in 1867. In 1881 a new church building was opened near the corner of Lyttelton street and Lincoln road, which was remodelled and reopened in 1898. The Sunday school was opened in 1933 and the hall opposite in 1936. In 1938 a church was formed. Recently it was resolved to consolidate the two churches into one membership and the present site was bought for this purpose. Services are. at present being held in the school hall and the new church will -be officially opened when ready for use. The old Spreydon Baptist Church building has been bought by the Christchurch Kindergarten Association for use as a school and training centre.
