NEW CASHMERE HOSPITAL

PRELIMINARY WORK ON SITE TEN-YEAR PLAN FOR BUILDING The levelling of the site for the new hospital at Cashmere has been finished but this is only a part of the work contemplated for 1948-49 in the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s 10-year plan for the hospital. There is also laying out of the site and a road deviation. The first actual building work' it scheduled to begin in 1949-50 with the initial development of the hospital block, but approval of the sketch plans was held up for some time by the Department of Health and only recently was final approval given. Working drawings are now being made by the architects. The other work contemplated next year is drainage of the site, estimated to cost £12,200. In 1950-51 it is estimated that £125,000 will be spent on the hospital block and £50,000 for the initial development of the nurses’ and maids' home. From 1950-51 to 1955-56 the board provided that the main Cashmere Hospital building will proceed uninterrupted by any major building work at the Christchurch Hospital and the heaviest estimated expenditure in this period is £300.650 in 1952-53 for development of the hospital block, the nurses' and maids’ home, porters’ quarters, standby plant and special departments; and £317.240 in the next year for the same work and the construction of service roads estimated to cost £UJnO.' . The plan envisages completion of the hospital in 1958-59, in which year there will be an estimated expenditure of £234,728. including £125,000 for the final development of the hospital block. The total estimated cost is £2,364,759, in which the biggest single item is £764,470 for the initial development of the hospital block. The final development of the hospital block is estimated to cost £477.972.
