PAINTINGS GIVEN TO AUCKLAND
DERBYSHIRE WOMAN’S GENEROSITY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 24. An offer by Mrs Lucy Carrington Wertheim, of Chinley. Derbyshire, of a further collection of paintings to the Auckland Art Gallery has been accepted by the City Council. Mrs Wertheim gave a collection of 154 oils and watercolours by modern British artists to the city last year, and these were placed in the council's permanent collection in November. The new gift will consist to some extent of paintings by artists from abroad. In a letter received by the council to-night, Mrs Wertheim said she had been asked if it would not be possible to lend the British collection from time to time to other public galleries in the Dominion. She agreed it was a pity that the pictures should be confined to Auckland, and accordingly offered another gift of paintings which would be owhed by the Auckland Art Gallery, but which could be used alternatively with those on permanent exhibition at the present time. Either collection could then be sent on loan throughout the Dominion. In accepting the gift, the City Council agreed to pay for transport, insurance and framing, as with the first collection. The council decided to convey its sincere thanks to Mrs Wertheim for her generous gesture.
