COMMISSION FOR HOSPITALS
CHRISTCHURCH OPINION RESERVED The Hospital Boards’ Association proposals for commission control of some public health administration will be discussed again by the North Canterbury Hospital Board before any policy is expressed. The chairman (Mr V. C. Lawn) told members yesterday that he was still dubious about the proposition, in spite of examples quoted of efficient control by this means overseas. He believed the situation there was quite different. Outlining the scheme, the secretary (Mr A. Prentice) said a commission of five—one with the status of a judge, two from the Health Department, and two from the hospital boards—was proposed to deal with such matters as salaries of staff not covered by awards, centralisation of specialist departments, building priorities, and amalgamation of districts. The plan might take some authority from the Health department, but little from the boards, n should speed up national hospital administration considerably.
