WAIMAKARIRI AND RAKAIA IN FLOOD
Both the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers were in heavy flood last evening after the heavy rain in the Southern Alps. The engineer to the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr H. W. Harris) said that the Waimakariri was up 7ft 6in at the Main North road bridge at the peak about 8 o’clock last evening. It was expected to hold that level until 5 qr 6 o’clock this morning, he said. * At Great Island, near the mouth of the Rakaia. the water was at a higher level than it had been for many years about 5 o’clock last evening, according to a catchment board officer’s report. Mr R. C. Todhunter. of Mount Hutt, said the water in the Rakaia gorge was higher than he had ever seen it. At the Rakaia Gorge bridge the level began to drop about 4 o’clock.
