MOTHERS’ UNION
ANNUAL FESTIVAL Seven hundred members of the Mothers’ Union from the' diocese of Christchurch and the West Coast attended the Holy Communion service held at the Christchurch Cathedral yesterday morning. A procession of 40 banner bearers, each carrying the banner of her branch, made an impressive sight as it proceeded up the aisle of the Cathedral where a choir of 50 members of the Mothers’ Union sang appropriate hymns with accompaniments played by Mr C. Foster Browne.
Archbishop West-Watson was celebrant at the service and he was assisted by the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. K. Warren), Archdeacons A. C. Purchas and E. A. Osmers, and the Revs. I. L. Richards and W. Orange. In the afternoon a garden party attended by about 500 members was held in the grounds at Bishopscourt, where addresses were given by Archbishop West-Watson and the Rev. Cqpon Mannering, Canon of Bristol Cathedral who, with his wife, is visiting Christchurch. Canon Mannering is the founder of the Bible reading Fellowship, of which he spoke informatively. Mrs H. W. Friedman was in charge of the tea arrangements, and was assisted by secretaries of branches.
