ROUTINE INSPECTIONS OF HOUSES

COMPLAINT BY HEALTH DEPARTMENT (F.A.) WELLINGTON, February 23. “There appear to be insufficient house-to-house inspections being carried out by inspectors,” says a letter circulated to local bodies by district medical officers of health, acting on instructions from the Director-General of Health (Dr. T. R. Ritchie). The letter .asks that more attention be given to inspections. The Hutt County Council, after receiving the letter to-day, gave its inspector leave to reply that, until the staffing of his department was more adequate, it would be impossible to do more than normal routine work. In any case, it was stated, even if inspectors served notices on owners or occupiers of properties, there was difficulty in obtaining labour and materials for necessary repairs. This in turn involved further visits and let-ter-writing by an inspector, without any practical result.
