PREVALENCE OF SHOPLIFTING
PROSECUTIONS URGED BY RETAILERS Fror. Our Own Reporter TIMARU, February 22. Concern at the “alarming growth” of shoplifting was expressed by delegates to the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation’s conference last evening. “Firms who detect shoplifters are invariably reluctant to institute proceedings because of the resultant publicity.” said Mr V. M. Simpson (Wellington), “but if retailers are not prepared to face up to the question it is obvious that the menace will increase. If these shoplifters are to be deterred there must be more prosecutions and heavier penalties.” Mr S. L. Moses (Wellington): “The extent to which these offences are increasing was shown when the police searched the home of a shoplifter who had been detected and found an amazing array of pilfered goods. It is now nothing short of a racket and the sooner it is cleaned up the better.” The conference decided to urge members to take a most serious view of all cases of shoplifting and to press for prosecutions in all instances.
