ARMISTICE TALKS AT RHODES
TRANSJORDAN AND ISRAEL KING ABDULLAH STATES POLICY (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 22. Giving his views on the Trans-jordan-Israeli armistice talks which are to begin at Rhodes on Friday, King Abdullah told the Amman correspondent of “The Times” that any Transjordan delegation sent to Rhodes would also speak for Iraq. Its
terms of reference would be in no way rigid. It would be authorised to compromise, but on some issues it would be adamant. There could be no compromise about the future of Jerusalem. His claims in Jerusalem were not excessive. They were for the Old City and those areas which had previously been occupied by Arabs. He had no claim on Jewish Jerusalem, but the Old City would never be yielded up to Israel. On this basis he was prepared to negotiate, added King Abdullah, but if Israel proved intransigent and resorted to force of arms, the Arab Legion would be ready.
