DEATH FROM CAMPHOR POISONING

CHILD GIVEN WRONG MEDICINE

, (P.A.) EANNEVIRKE, Feb. 21. The confusion of bottles of camphorated oil and castor oil resulted in the death of the 11-months-old son of Mr and Mrs Thomas W. Jamieson, of Hopelands, Woodville. At an inquest into the child’s death, Mr Jamieson told the Coroner that his wife decided to give the child a dose of castor nil. and handed him a bottle from which, without looking at the label, he three-parts filled a spoon. Mrs Jamieson gave the contents to the child. As soon as this was done, it was discovered that a mistake had been made and that camphorated oil and not castor oil had been administered. In spite of medical aid the child died in the Dannevirke Hospital. A verdict was returned that death was the result of respiratory and cardiac failure caused by camphor poisoning through a mistake in the administration of the oil by the parents.
