ACCIDENTS
MAN FALLS 200 FEET INTO RIVER COMPANION RESCUED (P.A.) NELSON, February 21. Two men who alighted from a service car on the road between Upper Takaka and the Cobb power station last night stepped over the edge of the road in the darkness. Scrub 30 feet below stopped the fall of one of the men, but the other fell into the Takaka rjver 200 feet below, and was killed. The man killed was Jack Longhurst, aged about 55. an employee of the Public Works Department at the Cobb dam. The other man, who was rescued, suffering from only a few abrasions, was Mr Peter Robinson, also an employee of the Public Works Department. • Mr Longhurst’s next-of-kin live in Karori, Wellington. Mr Longhurst’s body was recovered this morning from the Takaka river, about 50 yards down stream from the place where the accident occurred.
RESCUED FROM SEA MAN DIES ON WAY TO HOSPITAL (P.A.) DUNEDIN. February 21. Rescued in an exhausted* condition from the sea at Ocean Beach, Brighton, on Saturday afternoon, a man was taken by ambulance to the Dunedin Public Hospital. On his arrival at the hospital at 4.40 p.m., he was found to be dead. He was Herbert Strang, a married man, of 103 Carroll street. With the aid of an inflated tyre tube, Mr Strang rode the heavy swell for three hours before he was rescued. Off Ocean Beach, Mr Strang and two companions’ were thrown into the when a heavy swell upset xlieir boat. Mr Strang clung to g rubber tube, but his companions managed to right the dinghy, and with one oar they went ashore. They were unable to go to Mr Strang’s assistance because of the heavy sea and the fact that they had only one oar. A specially-manned boat put out for Mr Strang, and brought him to the shore at Brighton. Artificial respiration was immediately applied.
