COUNTY ENGINEERS’ QUALIFICATIONS

LOWERING OF STANDARD OPPOSED

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 21. Delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers to-day urged that no ground should be given to the New Zealand Counties’ Association in its efforts to lower the standard required by the Engineers’ Registration Board for county engineers. The chairman of the board (Mr W. L. Newnham. of Wellington) said the board might soon have to call on the institution to assist in resisting the move. A report from the institution's nominees on the board stated that the board maintained that the standard of registration could not be varied. Further. ample provision existed for men who had no opportunity to qualify by o’her means, to apply for registration bv submitting a thesis. Counties could also use to a limited extent the exemption clause of the 1944 amendment to the Engineers’ Registration Act. Anything to reduce further the standard would be disastrous to the building-up of a high and efficient standard of engineering practice in New Zealand, the report added.
