ANGLICAN BISHOP’S VIEW OF TRIAL
“ REAL MORAL ISSUE NOT A LITTLE OBSCURED ” (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, February 21. The Anglican Bishop of Sheffield (Dr. L. S. Hunter) says in the current issue of the Sheffield diocesan magazine: “Cardinal Mindszenty deserves our respect, our gratitude, and our prayers, but the real moral issue has been not a little obscured by the emotional propaganda of the Roman Catholic Church and the extravagant and hysterical statements. of which many of its spokesmen have been guilty. It has also been obscured by Cardinal Mindszenty himself, who on his own admission has been associated with political intrigues against the Hungarian Government. “Again, we have to distinguish between two different elements in the Hungarian conflict, namely, the conflict between a police State and Christian standards of justice and freedom, and the collision between a totalitarian State and a totalitarian church that is also manoeuvring or fighting for political power.’’
