SOUTH CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, February 21. Most events of the South Canterbury croquet championships are now nearing the semi-finals after six days’ play. One final was played to-day, and the semifinal of the open championship was played. The open championship semifinal resulted:—H. N. Darby (Aorangi) beat Mrs G. Metcalf (St. Clair), 26-19. 26-15. In the final of the junior handicap doubles, Miss Rosemary Kirk (Geraldine) and R. H. Clark (Dunedin Men’s Club) beat Mrs M. C. Milne (Methven) and A. Hathaway (Aorangi), 26-19.
WEST COAST TOURNAMENT OPENS The West Coast Croquet Association’s annual tournament opened at the Makura courts, Greymouth, in fine, sunny weather yesterday. The president, Mrs F. Higgins, welcomed many players and a number of visitors. Results were:— Handicap doubles.—First round; Mesdames Nicholls (Christchurch) and W. Pring (Greymouth) beat Mesdames J. Shannon and M. Keating (Greymouth), 26-12; Mesdames J. Wilson and T. Howard (Runanga) beat Mesdames Bull and Brownlees (Christchurch), 26-21; Mrs Hawke and Miss McDowell (Ashburton) beat Mesdames F. Higgins and R. Ramage (Cobden), 26-13.
