SECOND DAY AT HOKITIKA

racing

SHENANDOAH WINS . MAIN EVENT “The Press” Special Service HOKITIKA, Feb. 21 Shenandoah, which benefited bv his race o n the first day when he beat' all but Money Lender in a division of the princi* nal event, outclassed the field opposing him in the Anniversary Handicap, the main event on the second day of the Westland Facing Cluo's programme at Hokitika to-day- Shenandoah was always going easily in front and was several lengths clear of Renege at the straight entrance With another gap to Rival Chase, Paper Ruffle, and Falconbridge. Shenandoah was not challenged and won by four lengths from Renege, which as comfortably held off River Chase. Falconbridge, which was near the rear in the early and middle stages, finished on for fourth, just ahead of Master Baron, with Atreus next. Grill tailed off all the wav Shenandoan s supporters lost money on the place machine, and Renege’s place dividend was not profitable. H In a close finish. Deficiency got in the deciding stride to beat Dress Rehearsal ia the open sprint, the Rimu Handican with the favourite, Faites vos Jeux onlv half a length away after being slow awav Dress Rehearsal endeavoured to lead all the way and was still piloting the field as they turned for home, with Deficiency and Post Graduate handy, and then John o’ London and Faites vos Jeux. Deficiency and Dress Rehearsal had a great battle all the way down the straight and the judge decided for Deficiency by a nose, with Faites vos Jeux half a length away. Then came Renege, which also finished fast after being one of the last away. p os t Graduate tired in the straight and finished fifth Battle Spear improved on his first dav’s showing to win the Farewell Hack Handicap from the hot favourite, Newspaper with Allls Fair third. An inquiry was instituted by the stipendiary steward Mr L. Lewis, into alleged interference with All’s Fair on the turn after going about a furlong, and the judicial committee altered the placings under rules 285 and 289 awarding first place to Newspaper, second to AU’s Fair and third to Battle Spear The owner of Battle Spear, Mr A. Clous-’ ton, immediately lodged an appeal against the decision of the committee. All dividends were held up. Battle Spear’s win price was just over a score. In the incident on which the inauirv hinged, it appeared that Battle Spear on the outer went over on to Newspaper which, in turn, checked All's Fair on the rails. All's Fair lost several lengths The weather was ideal for the second day, but the track was soft after heavv rain during the week-end. The totalisato'r handled £14.104 10s. compared with £14.648 10s on the second day last year The total for the meeting was £29.228 10s’ compared with £30,058, a decrease of £S2Q 10s.
