REGULAR O.E.E.C. MEETINGS
MINISTERS OF EIGHT POWERS (Rec. 7 p.m.) PARIS, February- 18. Meetings of the eight-Power Ministerial Committee of the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation will probably take place in Paris at least every two months, and last for perhaps a week. They will be held in secret. The next meeting will be on March 4. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Stafford Cripps) said to-night that this was a new technique for international co-operation and opened up a possibility of getting senior Cabinet Ministers of the eight countries working together like a national Cabinet. This, to be successful, would require a continuity of completely frank discussions without publicity. The Belgian Prime Minister (Mr Paul Spaak) said in Paris that he could not accept the permanent leadership of the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation because it was impossible for him to abandon Belgium’s politics at present Mr Spaak added that there was no unanimity on the proposal for a permanent chairman. Britain and France were among the nations opposing it.
