MONEY LENDER AND NIGHT OWL

\RACING

GREYMOUTH SUCCESSES REPEATED The two principal winners at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting last Monday, Money Lender and Night Owl, repeated those performances in the two divisions of the principal race, the Hokitika Handicap, on the first day of the Westland Racing Club's meeting at Hokitika on Saturday. Both won very easily. In the first division. Night Owl took over the lead before three furlongs had been covered, and he led with half a mile t? *rom Robe and Renege, with Early Night and Super Lake next, and GriH at the rear. Coming to the straight Renege moved into second place, but otherwise the order was unchanged. Night Owl came home an easy winner from I Renege, with Royal Robe a fair third. Early Night was fourth and then came Grill, which made up some ground in the straight. Money Lender was perfectly placed from the start in the second division, and he was never further back than third. A PP{ oac h ln g the straight he moved up to challenge the pacemaker Shenandoah, widi Rival Chase and Falconbridge the only others with a real chance. Money Lender drew out in the run home fox

an easy win from Shenandoah, which l'£ r . an . d Falconbridge finished on for third. Rival Chase was fourth, and then came Master Baron.

Falconbridge was the unlucky horse of the race. He refused to jump out when the barrier was released, and lost about 20 lengths. With five furlongs to go he was still 10 lengths behind the leader, but from then on he made up his ground steadily. The Kincardine colt, Bambalina, winner of five races this season for Mr W. A. | Diedrichs, of Kokatahi, failed to win his first race in open company. He had to Ibe content with second place to the speedy Wingatui sprinter, Faites Vos Jeux, in the Summer Handicap. The honours of the race, however, were with Bambalina. After giving trouble at the start he was last away, giving the leaders, Faites Vos Jeux and Dress Rehearsal six lengths when the field settled down. Then, going into the back, Bambalina

nearly came down, losing more ground. Going across the top, Bambalina moved up and, turning into the straight, was close behind Faites Vos Jeux, which was trailing the pacemaker. Dress Rehearsal. The last-named was done with half-way down the straight, and Faites Vos Jeux came on for an easy win from Bambalina, ! which beat Dress Rehearsal comfortably, without having a chance with the winner. Both Bambalina and Faites Vos Jeux gave a lot of trouble at the start, refusing to go into the starting stalls. When they did go in, Faites Vof Jeux received almost a flying start and Bambalina was very slow to move. The Orari trainer, L. H. Pratt, and his I successful apprentice, W. D. Skelton, had I a good run of success with three winI ners, Night Owl, Exchange, and Morning | Watch, all of which were ridden by SkelI ton. Skelton received a severe shaking I when Open Sky came down with him I just after passing the winning post in the I final event of the day, the Miners’ Hack I Handicap. Open Sky finished fourth in I the race.

The meeting opened in fine but dull weather, and showers fell towards the end of the day. A cold wind made conditions uncomfortable. The totalisator handled £15,124, compared with £15,409 10s on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £285 10s. i Results:—
