SINGLE DIRECT PLACED IN HEAT (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) ADELAIDE. Feb. 20. All three divisions of the first heat of the Inter-Dominion Trotting ship were held yesterday in fair conditions. The New Zealander, Single Direct, which raced in the third division, was forced to travel wide throughout the distance, but covered it in 2min 13.9 sec, the fastest time of the heat. Local Gold broke down after the start and threw her driver ftom the sulky. Progressive points: Raidella. Amorous, Bandbox, Single Direct. Victory Speed, 5; Bellgrave, 4; Luraider, 2; Recovered. Five yards; 10 yards. Time. 2min 55.25ec. Winner’s mile -rate, 2min 14.3 seThe New Zealand pacer. Local Gold, had the ill-fortune to break early in his division of the Inter-Dominion Championship. He dislodged his driver, who, however, got back in the. sulky, but Local Gold was put out of the race. Single Direct, 24 yards behind, carried on gamely to run second to Raidella. which won by five yards, registering a mile rate of 2min 14.3 sec. Single Direct, pleasing in his run—he made the fastest time, 2min 13.9 sec—is One of the bestbacked horses for the Grand Final. Amorous and Bandbox fought a desperate finish in their division, Amorous winning by a short head and registering 2min 13.4 sec. Bandbox did 2min 12.85« c. The South Australian mare. Victory Speed, beat the Tasmanian, Lu Raider, by a short head in the second division, pacing 2min 14.9 sec. A New Zealand-bred two-year-old is expected to win the Capling Stakes at Kadina on Tuesday. He is Josedale Beauty, by Josedale Grattan, purchased by Mr W. J. Messenger. It will be his first race in Australia. ’ The championships will be continued at Wayville on February 26 and March 2, with the final on March 5. The attendance on Saturday night was estimated at 38,000.
