FREIGHTER GOES AGROUND
PULLED OFF SAND BY OTAGO TUG (P.A.) DUNEDIN, February 17. The 2361-ton inter-colonial freighter Kauri was stranded on the sand at Otakau, near the entrance to Otago harbour, for eight hours to-day. The ship left the wharf at Dunedin for Wellington at 5.45 a.m. As she was leaving the harbour, she had engine trouble, and drifted gently on to the sand about 7.15 a.m. The vessel’s holds were full of general cargo, wheat and gypsum. Little difficulty was experienced by the Otago Harbour Board’s tug Dunedin in freeing the vessel. With the aid of the incoming tide, she was eased off the sand about 3.15 p.m. and, apparently undamaged, headed out to sea on a course lor Wellington.
