QUEEN MARY AT THE THEATRE

MR SHERRIFF DECLINES TO SPOIL LAST ACT (From Our Own Correspondent.)

LONDON, February 7. Queen Mary had a theatre outing this week. She visited the Strand, where she saw R. C. Sherriff s last play, “Miss Mabel.” This is a murder story with Mary Jerrold as a sweet old lady who poisons her rich sister with toadstool soup to get money for charities.

The Queen, who was accompanied by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, received members of the cast in the flower-filled ante-room of the Royal box during the interval. The author also was present. “This is the second tilne I have seen you as a murderess in this theatre,” smiled Queen Mary to Mary Jerrold. “Last time yo.u were one of the two old ladies in “Arsenic and Old Lace.” “Yes. I make rather a habit of murder on the stage,” Miss Jerrold acknowledged. “But it’s all done in kindness.” To Mr Sherriff, the Queen said: “I wonder how your fascinating play is going to end. I have my own ideas.” And she put forward her theory to the author.

Mr Sherriff would not confirm it. “You wouldn’t want me to spoil the last act for you/’ he suggested. Queen Mary agreed.
