MANAGEMENT OF TROUT STREAMS
Sir, —I notice Mr Stokell’s letter about the disappearance of stream trout. Being a trout angler for over 50 years, I have seen in the Halswell river for the first time a number of lamprey eels. I saw several trout feeding, and when a lampery appeared the trout would bury themselves in the weed as if frightened. Are these lamprey the enemy of trout and the cause of their not taking the fly in the daytime? There are plenty of trout in this river, and only very few caught.—Yours, etc., DAVID HAMILTON. Tai Tapu, February 17, 1949.
