NEW BRIGHTON CLUB

TROTTING

Victory Globe May Win Main Race CHECKMATE IN FORM FOR SPRINT Few pacers have created such good impressions this season as Victory Globe, Fortuna, and Wayfarer, and they will probably dispute favouritism in the £l2OO New Brighton Handicap, the main event on the programme for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting at New Brighton to-morrow. A four-year-old horse by Springfield Globe from Rorqual, Victory Globe, which is trained at Addington by J. Young for Mrs E. McKeon, has shown outstanding ability to gain five wins and a second in his eight starts this season, his most important successes being over Wayfarer in the Templeton Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on January 1, and over Bull’s Eye in the John Hole Memorial Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on January 8. A good performer over all distances, Victory Globe should be seen at his best on the roomy New Brighton track. The winner of five of her eight races this season, Fortuna, which is trained at Templeton by J. B. Pringle for Messrs E. August and D. Blackie, is a four-year-old mare by Springfield Globe from Betty Wrack. After starting the season with a win over Demetrius in the Metropolitan Challenge Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Troting Club’s meeting, Fortuna was taken to Epsom, where she gained two wins at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting later 1 in the month. A good performer on grass tracks, Fortuna gained her other wins at later meetings of the same club.

Wayfarer, a five-year-old horse by Nelson Derby from Regal Voyage, which left other winpers in Haughty. Traverse, Implacable, and Tradition, has raced well for B. Grice, who trains him at Winslow, to be placed in seven of his races this season, his record including a dead-heat with Gay Knight in the Avon Handicap at the New Brighton meeting on September 11 and wins in the Midaleton Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on January 3 and in the Royal Handicap at Forbury Park on January 29. A good stayer, Wayfarer finishes well under pressure and he should still be going well when most of the others have had enough in the New Brighton Handicap. Besides Victory Globe, Fortuna, and Wayfarer, the field includes Gay Knight. Belmont Hall, Premier Royal, and Prince Hall. They all have winning form to their credit and are entitled to respect. x , An innovation on the programme is the Tria] Handicap, which is restricted to C grade drivers, who get too few opportunities of experience. The plight of C grade drivers has been recognised for years, but until the New Brighton Club put on a race for them no club had macle a practical move to encourage them. The Trial Handicap, which is equivalent to an apprentices’ race in the galloping sport, is a progressive move and one which could well be adopted by other clubs. The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator: Trial Hahdicap. Black Diamond and Aqua Lady. Double Deck and Beckleigh; New Brighton Hahdicap, Fortuna and Novelda: Burwood Handicap. British Machine and Shalimar; Autumn Handicap. Suzerain and Dan Martin; Eclipse Handicap. Carisbrook and Pirouette, On Approval and Sir Peterson; Final Handicap, Limerick Pride and Checkmate. The New Brighton track is in excellent order and it should provide fast going. Large fields are carded .and the racing should be full of interest throughout the programme. Horses in form include:— 10.45 a.m.—Belfast Handicap: Gloxania, Golden Slipper, Tradition. 11.28 a.m.—Progressive Handicap: Passive, Nydia, Wairiri Girl. 12.13 p.m.—Trial Handicap: Black Dia-mond-Aqua Lady bracket, Pierre, Wynleaf 12.58 p.m.—New Brighton Handicap: Victory Globe, Fortuna, Wayfarer. 1.43 p.m.—Burwood Handicap: Demetrius, Gantree, Hydro Belle. 2.28 p.m.—Autumn Handicap: Loyal Flier, David Dryden, Dan Martin-Suze-rain bracket. 3.13 p.m.—Eclipse Handicap: Super Globe, Magnificent, On Approval-Sir Peterson bracket. 3.58 p.m.—Binal .Handicap:;Checkmate, Maida Uijton, .'Bbnny Scott. The following is the programme: BELFAST HANDICAP. Of £350. 4min 47sec class. Two miles.

Gloxania’s consistent record of eight placings in her eight starts for the season includes a second to Foreign Lady in 4min 23 3-ssec in the Wakanui Handicap of two miles at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on December 27. If Gloxania repeats that form for I. Scoon, who trains her at Methven, she should go Close to winning over the same distance in the Belfast Handicap. Likely types in the field include Golden Slipper, Novacord, Rasponi, Ben’s Son, Tradition, and Courageous. A Gold Bar mare, Golden Slipper, which raced well for two wins at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting, worked attractively at New Brighton on Tuesday morning for R. A. Hartley, who trains her at Burwood. Tradition, a sister to Haughty and Wayfarer, has been placed in her last two races. With the race run to suit her, she should be handy to Gloxania and Golden Slipper at the finish. PROGRESSIVE HANDICAP, Of £350. Trotters. 3min 38sec class. One mile and a half.

Passive, which brought her record for the season to a win and seven minor placings when she beat all but Lady Inchcape in the Yaldhurst Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting last week, is handicapped to give away starts of up to 60 yards in the Progressive Handicap, but she is above the average and she may not find the task beyond her. Most opposition to Passive may come from Desworthy, which won two races at Greymouth on January 5; from Nydia and Single Task, which were both placed at the recent Wellington meeting; and from Wairiri Girl, a winner at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting and at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting. TRIAL HANDICAP, Of £450. 3min 29sec class. One mile and a half.

P. G. O’Reilly, who trains his team at Highbank, will parade a strong bracket in Black Diamond and Aqua Lady in the Trial Handicap. A colt by Gallant Knight from Doris Nelson, Black Diamond raced well at his last start to beat Rasponi by half a length in the Selwyn Trot Handicap at the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on January 29. Aqua Lady, which has been placed in seven' races this season, showed her best form at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on November 27, when she beat* Mojavie and Red Emperor over a mile and five furlongs in the Randwick Handicap. Of the others. Pierre. Gay Pal, Risingholme, and Wynleaf make most appeal. Although he will be at a disadvantage against his more seasoned opponents. Gay Pal, which has not raced for some time, has been working well at Addington for C. Isaacson. He may be capable of springing a surprise in this race. NEW BRIGHTON HANDICAP, Of £l2OO. 4min 32sec class. Two miles.

Fortuna and Gay Knight make most appeal of the horses on the scratch mark in the New Brighton Handicap, which has attracted a strong field of 15 improving’ pacers. The winner of three races this season. Gay .Knight recorded 4min 18 4-ssec when he beat Belmont Hall by

a neck in the Electric Handicap at Addington on November 12. Gay Knight meets Belmont Hall on 12 yards better terms to-morrow, and he should hold him safely. Besides * the favourites, Victory Globe and Wayfarer, the horses on the 12 yards mark include recent winners in Premier Royal and Prince Hall. ' A good stayer. Prince Hall is making his first appearance since being trained at Yaldhurst by R. J. Berry. Bonny Scott and Maida Dillon make most appeal of the back-markers, but they are set hard tasks to give away starts to pacers of the calibre of Victory Globe, Fortuna, Gay Knight, and Wayfarer. BURWOOD HANDICAP, Of £6OO. 3min 26sec class. One mile and a half.

Dale (10) 12 Queen (1) 24 Demetrius, the winner c-f the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on October 9, indicated that he was returning to his best form by his dashing display to finish fourth to Lyceum, Gantree, and Zulu in the Harewood Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting last week. He would need to show little improvement to lead the field home in the Burwood Handicap, which has attracted some likely improvers, including Gantree, Hydro Belle, British Machine, and Gay Note. A winner at his last two starts, British Machine is trained at Templeton by C. R. Berkett, who also has a recent winner in Shalimar engaged in the race. Hydro Belle's second to Chamfer in the Gore Memorial Handicap at Forburj' Park on January 2 was a good effort. On that form she must be respected. AUTUMN HANDICAP,

The Reefton-trained Loyal Flier gave an encouraging performance to finish filth after giving away starts of up to 48 yards in the Yaldhurst Handicap at Addington last week. If S. C. Griggs can persuade him to leave the mark correctly, Loyal Flier should race well from the 24 yards mark in the Autumn Handicap. Beverley Volo and David Dryden gave good displays to finish first and third in the Aviation Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting last week, and with Mamanuas, which finished second to Tatsydale,in the Progressive Handicap at the same club’s meeting on January 3, they should dispute the finish with Loyal Flier. ECLIPSE HANDICAP, Of £7OO. -3min 22sec class. One mile

Making his first appearance since being trained at Addington by J. Young for Mr C. N. Radford, Super Globe attempted to lead all the way in the Wigram Handicap at Addington last week, but after a gallant effort he was beaten into second place in a photo-finish by Direct Heir. Super Globe should be improved by the race, and a winning turn may come for him in the Eclipse Handicap, in which he meets Direct Heir on 24 yards better terms. Magnificent, which had to accept third place when his driver, P. P. Gallagher, could not find an opening for him at a critical stage of the Wigram Handicap, and Mr C. L. Rhodes’s bracket. On Approval and Sir Peterson, may divide the minor prize-money. FINAL HANDICAP, Of £750. 2min„.4ssec class. One mile and a quarter.

Checkmate, which appears to be improving with each race, gave a sterling performance to dead-heat for second place with Globe Direct after appearing to be unlucky in the running of the Farewell Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington last week. If C. S. Donald can manoeuvre him clear of trouble, Checkmate may gain an overdue win for Mr H. Steel in the Farewell Handicap. Positive, a consistent performer for P. P. Gallagher; Bonny Scott, which worked well at New Brighton on Tuesday morning; and the Invercargill visitor, Maida Dillon, which won at the Canterbury Park meeting last month, appear the hardest for Checkmate to beat.
